What Is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax system used in India on many supplies of goods and services. The tax treatment depends on factors such as the nature of the supply, classification, location, exemptions and applicable legal provisions.
A GST calculator helps with the arithmetic: finding tax on a taxable price, extracting included tax from a final price, and separating tax into components where the transaction calls for them. It does not determine which rate or tax type legally applies.
How to Use the GST Calculator
- Choose the currency. Select the monetary unit in which you want to enter and display amounts. This is a display choice, not currency conversion.
- Enter the amount. For GST-exclusive mode, enter the price before tax. For GST-inclusive mode, enter the final price including GST.
- Select the calculation mode. Choose GST Exclusive to add tax or GST Inclusive to extract included tax.
- Choose a rate. Pick a preset percentage or enter your own rate after confirming which rate applies to the transaction.
- Select the tax treatment. For an illustrative Indian breakdown, use Intra-state for CGST and SGST or Inter-state for IGST, as appropriate.
- Read the breakdown. Check the taxable value, GST amount, total price and applicable component amounts.
GST Calculation Formulas
GST-Exclusive Formula: Add GST
Use GST-exclusive mode when the entered amount is the taxable value before GST.
GST amount = Taxable value × (GST rate / 100)
Final price = Taxable value + GST amount
For example, if the taxable value is ₹1,000 and the illustrative GST rate is 18%:
- GST amount = ₹1,000 × 18 / 100 = ₹180
- Final price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
GST-Inclusive Formula: Remove GST
Use GST-inclusive mode when the entered amount is the total price that already includes GST.
Taxable value = Inclusive price / (1 + GST rate / 100)
GST amount = Inclusive price − Taxable value
For example, if the price including GST is ₹1,180 and the illustrative rate is 18%:
- Taxable value = ₹1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000
- GST amount = ₹1,180 − ₹1,000 = ₹180
Important: Multiplying an inclusive price by 18% does not correctly extract 18% included GST. You must first divide by 1.18.
GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive: Comparison
| Feature | GST Exclusive | GST Inclusive |
|---|---|---|
| Entered amount | Price before GST | Price including GST |
| What the calculator does | Adds GST | Extracts included GST |
| Example input | ₹1,000 | ₹1,180 |
| Illustrative rate | 18% | 18% |
| Taxable value | ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 |
| GST amount | ₹180 | ₹180 |
| Final price | ₹1,180 | ₹1,180 |
The percentages above demonstrate the mathematical method. They should not be treated as a statement of the legally applicable GST rate for any particular product or service.
CGST, SGST and IGST Explained
Indian GST can involve different tax components depending on the nature and place of supply.
CGST and SGST: Intra-State Illustration
For qualifying intra-state transactions, GST is generally split between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). In applicable Union Territory cases, UTGST may apply in place of SGST.
Suppose the total GST amount is ₹180:
| Tax component | Example amount |
|---|---|
| CGST | ₹90 |
| SGST | ₹90 |
| Total GST | ₹180 |
The calculator uses an equal CGST/SGST split in its intra-state mode. This is an illustrative breakdown, not a determination of the transaction’s legal classification.
IGST: Inter-State Illustration
IGST is generally applicable to inter-state supplies and certain other transactions under Indian GST law. In inter-state mode, the same illustrative ₹180 tax is shown as:
| Tax component | Example amount |
|---|---|
| IGST | ₹180 |
| Total GST | ₹180 |
Do not add CGST, SGST and IGST together. They are different treatments of the relevant supply. At the same taxable value and overall tax rate, the illustrated total GST remains ₹180.
Worked GST Calculation Examples
Example 1: Add GST to a Taxable Price
An item has a hypothetical taxable value of ₹2,500. Assume that 5% is the appropriate rate for this example.
- Taxable value: ₹2,500
- GST: ₹2,500 × 5% = ₹125
- Total amount: ₹2,625
Example 2: Extract GST from a Final Price
An invoice total is ₹5,900, including GST. Assume an illustrative 18% rate.
- Taxable value: ₹5,900 / 1.18 = ₹5,000
- GST included: ₹5,900 − ₹5,000 = ₹900
- Total amount: ₹5,900
Example 3: Compare Intra-State and Inter-State Breakdowns
For a taxable value of ₹10,000 with an illustrative rate of 18%, total GST is ₹1,800 and the final amount is ₹11,800.
| Mode | CGST | SGST | IGST | Total GST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intra-state | ₹900 | ₹900 | ₹0 | ₹1,800 |
| Inter-state | ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,800 |
The choice between these modes must follow the actual transaction’s place-of-supply and other legal rules.
How Do You Choose the Correct GST Rate?
The correct GST rate cannot be determined from price alone. It may depend on the classification of goods or services, exemptions, supply conditions, and the rules in force on the transaction date.
Do not assume that a displayed preset is the current official rate. Confirm the applicable rate using relevant notifications and the official GST portal or seek qualified tax advice. This calculator accepts a selected percentage and performs the arithmetic; it does not provide product classification.
Common GST Calculation Mistakes
- Adding tax to an already-inclusive price. Use inclusive mode when tax is already contained in the entered amount.
- Calculating included tax as a percentage of the final price. Divide by
(1 + rate / 100)to recover the taxable value. - Adding IGST on top of CGST and SGST. Select the applicable treatment; do not combine both alternatives.
- Assuming a standard rate applies to every product. Confirm the correct classification and rate before calculating.
- Treating the tool as an invoice or filing system. A calculated tax amount is not a substitute for a compliant tax invoice or return.
- Ignoring rounding differences. Invoice-level rounding rules and item-level calculations may affect the amount displayed in accounting systems.
When Is a GST Calculator Useful?
A GST calculator can help buyers, sellers, small businesses and students check arithmetic when working with an assumed rate. It is useful for comparing a price before and after GST, checking the tax component of a total, or understanding the difference between CGST/SGST and IGST display formats.
For actual billing, compliance, accounting and filing, additional details may matter, including tax classification, input tax credit, place of supply, exemptions, invoice format and current legal requirements.
